Karl Marxs Life and Work As a German philosopher, a politician, and an important figure within the Communist League, Karl Heinrich Marx birthed a new way of looking at things through his beliefs, ideas, and writings. Karl Marx was considered to be â€Å"†¦certainly one of the most important minds of modern times†(1). Studies say that Karl’s family was of a large size, consisting of about four children: Karl, Sophie, Emilie, and Luise. Jenny von Westphalen At the age of eighteen, Karl Marx became engaged to Jenny von Westphalen, whom was a close friend to his elder sister Sophie. Jenny was twenty-two years old, and â€Å"her youthful beauty was in its first glorious bloom and she was greatly admired and much courted, and as the daughter of a highly-placed official she might have made a brilliant match† (3). Without asking her parents’ permission, Karl and Jen were engaged. Despite his father’s request to move to Berlin, Karl decided to stay with his fiancà © and prepare to become a husband. Marx was a talented individual, whom studied jurisprudence, history, and philosophy. He also learned English and Italian on his own and was truly gifted at poetry. He studied a lot, like a typical college student, yet his health was threatened; â€Å"He suffered from over-exertion† (4). Karl was angry with his father because he wanted to return home, but his father did not approve. Apparently, his father had been bedridden with a sickness for nearly five weeks, since February 1838. He had a liver disease and three months following the 10th of May, in 1838, he eventually died. After his father’s death, Karl Marx stayed in Berlin for three more years and the circle of Young Hegelians in Berlin was what ultimately kept him in love with Hegelian philosophy.
